On December 5, 2013, the world lost one of its greatest figures, Nelson andela. Often lovingly called Madiba, Mandela was South Africa's first black president elected in the nation's first real democratic election. He held office from 1994 to 1999, helping to dismantle apartheid as well as tackle deep-rooted racial issues, reduce poverty, and promote peace through reconciliation. For all these accomplishments, Mandela received much acclaim, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize.
However, what people remember the most is that Mandela was imprisoned for 27 of his 95 years on Earth for his anti-apartheid activities prior to becoming president.
