Acer aims to ship 4-5 million smartphones in 2014 and 10 million units in 2015, according to the company's Smartphone Business president Liu Shi-tai. Acer shipped 2.5 million smartphones in 2013.
Acer will focus on marketing smartphones in emerging markets where demand for entry-level and mid-range models is still growing, Liu said. Acer has been expanding marketing channels through cooperation with local mobile telecom carriers, Liu indicated. Acer has landed smartphone procurement orders from mobile telecom carriers in Thailand and Malaysia and will solicit orders in India in the fourth quarter of 2014, Liu noted.
Acer plans to launch an entry-level smartphone for retail sale at US$49.99 in emerging markets in the first quarter of 2015. The model is expected to account for 30% of Acer's smartphone shipments in 2015, Liu said. The shipment proportion of LTE-enabled smartphones will increase from 10% in 2014 to 30% in 2015, Liu indicated.
