疾管署指出，伊波拉病毒是線狀病毒科的一種，一九七六年首次出現在蘇丹與剛果民主共和國。去年十二月起，幾內亞出現伊波拉病毒出血熱疫情，後擴及鄰國賴比瑞亞及獅子山，病例及死亡人數為歷年之最。

伊波拉病毒可經由血液、分泌物、器官、精液人傳人，或透過中間宿主果幅、猴、猿、豬等，再傳染給人類，目前個案死亡率高達九成，沒有疫苗可預防，台灣迄今未有任何確定病例報告，傳染風險低。
