傳統篩檢胎兒是否有唐氏症，需在懷孕十一周以後接受抽取絨毛膜或羊膜檢查，卻有可能造成流產，最近國內已引進非侵入性的胎兒染色體基因檢測，可提早到懷孕第九周受檢，其中由台大、彰化基督教等醫院引進這種次世代基因定序，只抽媽媽的血液，約十到二十天就可知道結果；但這項檢查需自費，收費行情約在兩萬到兩萬四千元上下。

台大醫院引進的次世代基因定序，也提供孕婦抽血檢驗胎兒是否有唐氏症的另一種選擇。

台大醫院基因醫學部主治醫師陳沛隆表示，次世代基因定序可直接檢驗基因，判斷胎兒染色體是否異常，檢驗速度也比較快。

而且這項檢驗技術也應用到其他遺傳疾病如結節硬化症、家族性乳癌、大腸癌與聽力缺損等。
