29日洋基與紅襪之戰，田中將大9局上在2好1壞的情況下，還是被納波里(Mike Napoli)揮陽春全壘打，以1比2吞二連敗，只是接下來卻出現爭議，納波里在回到本壘與隊友們擊掌時，卻不經意大喊「好白痴」，剛好被鏡頭捕捉到，被《紐約郵報》披露後引發爭議，害得納波里急忙澄清說「不是針對田中」。

田中與紅襪激戰，9局上仍登板拚勝拚也拚完投，兩人出局面對納波里也取得球數領先，飆出96英哩速球，卻被推向比較淺的右外野，球剛好過全壘打牆，形成一支超前的紅不讓，田中整個臉都垮下來，紅襪則士氣大振，納波里回來與隊友們歡慶並擊掌時，「What an idiot」卻脫口而出。

透過轉播放送，加上媒體報導，這個話題立即在紐約發酵，納波里了解之後澄清表示，「不是在針對他，我以為他會投指叉球。我希望他投那種球路，也試等他的失投球，當看到球高起來時我奮力揮擊，讓它能飛到某個地方。」紅襪教頭法瑞爾(John Farrell)則說，「我與球隊的每個人都相當尊敬田中。」

洋基30日賽前也回應納波里的「白痴說」，不過大部份球員與教練覺得沒什麼大不了，強打「鐵爺」塔克薛拉(Mark Texeira)表示，「我覺得沒什麼問題，如果每個人在休息區或者更衣室說話內容都要被放大檢視，那就沒人敢談比賽了。」

向來愛恨分明的洋基總教練吉拉迪(Joe Girardi)則表示，「他不是那種會貶低人的人，但不幸的現在我們所待的世界裡，每一件事都會被觀察，我從來不覺得那時那種差勁的人。他是個努力打比賽而且非常愛比賽的人。」
